166-million-year-old dinosaur footprints discovered in Oxfordshire, UK

In an exciting discovery, scientists have uncovered the largest dinosaur trackway ever found in the UK. This unbelievable find was made at Dewars Farm Quarry in Oxfordshire, shedding light on what life was like during the Jurassic period.

A team of paleontologists from the Universities of Oxford and Birmingham worked on the site, which dates back an astonishing 166 million years to the Middle Jurassic period. They unearthed hundreds of dinosaur footprints, revealing what experts describe as a "dinosaur highway." These footprints belonged to both plant-eating and meat-eating dinosaurs, including the mighty Megalosaurus, a fearsome predator from the past.

The excavation, which wrapped up in June 2024, uncovered five major trackways. The longest of these stretches is an incredible 150 meters. Four of these pathways were made by sauropods, which were enormous plant-eating dinosaurs like Cetiosaurus. These gentle giants could grow up to 18 meters long and are known for their long necks and tails.
The fifth trackway was created by the Megalosaurus, a nine-meter-long carnivorous dinosaur. This predator left behind its distinctive three-toed, clawed footprints, which give us a glimpse into its hunting and roaming patterns.

This remarkable site has provided scientists with valuable insights into the behaviors and movements of these ancient creatures. It’s not just a discovery of footprints—it’s a snapshot of a time when dinosaurs ruled the Earth.
