At least 14 Jordanian Hajj pilgrims have tragically lost their lives and 17 others are reported missing in Saudi Arabia amid extreme heatwave conditions during this year's pilgrimage. The temperature in the holy town soared above 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and was anticipated to peak at 47 degrees Celsius on Monday.
The Jordanian foreign ministry confirmed the deaths of 14 of its nationals, attributing their passing to strokes induced by the severe heat wave. Efforts are underway to coordinate with Saudi authorities to manage the burial or transportation of the deceased as per their families' wishes.
In addition to the Jordanian casualties, the Iranian Red Crescent reported the deaths of five Iranian pilgrims, although the specific causes were not disclosed by Iranian officials or confirmed by Saudi authorities.

Saudi Arabia has implemented various measures to mitigate the impact of the intense heat, including setting up climate-controlled areas, distributing water, and providing guidance to pilgrims on safeguarding themselves from the sun. The Saudi health ministry issued advisories advising pilgrims to stay hydrated and avoid outdoor activities during the hottest periods of the day.
Hajj, one of the largest annual gatherings globally, has drawn over 1.8 million pilgrims this year, according to Saudi officials. Over the past three decades, incidents such as stampedes, tent fires, and extreme weather conditions have resulted in numerous fatalities during the pilgrimage. Last year alone, more than 240 individuals, predominantly from Indonesia, perished during Hajj, with heatstroke and other factors contributing to over 2,000 medical emergencies.
The current Hajj season is set to conclude on Wednesday, with authorities continuing to monitor and respond to health and safety challenges faced by pilgrims amidst the challenging environmental conditions.
