Natalia Khomenko shared the disturbing incident on social media, recounting how she booked a room in a well-known hotel chain near Ryogoku Tower in Tokyo. She had chosen Japan for her vacation, believing it to be one of the safest countries in the world. Her first day went smoothly, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

After spending the day sightseeing, she returned to her room in the evening. As usual, she locked the door, undressed, and laid down to relax. Then she noticed a strange smell in the room. At first, she thought it could be coming from her hair or the bed. She even joked to herself that it smelled like a dead body under the bed.
But when she bent down to check, she was horrified to find a man hiding underneath.
"I saw a man’s eyes staring at me," she said. "I jumped up and screamed. The man crawled out, stared at me for a few seconds, and then screamed back before running out of the room."
Shocked and scared, she called the hotel staff, who arrived with the police. During the inspection, they found a power bank and a USB cable under the bed—belongings that didn’t belong to her. Natalia kept asking how this could happen, but the hotel couldn’t provide a clear answer. Even worse, they told her that the hallway had no cameras, making it unlikely that the intruder would be found.
She contacted the booking platform she had used to reserve the room, seeking compensation for the trauma she experienced. But she was only offered $178 in coupons, despite having paid $600 for a three-night stay.
“I was so upset,” she said. “This wasn’t just about money. I felt completely unsafe and helpless. I couldn’t sleep for the rest of my trip. I kept thinking—how did someone know I was alone? How did they get into my room?”
Her story shocked many people online, especially because Japan is widely viewed as one of the safest travel destinations in the world.
Some people who claimed to work in hotels said it’s possible someone with staff access, like a housekeeper or manager with a master key, could have let the intruder in. Others shared their own creepy experiences at the same hotel chain.
One person described how an old man walked into their room in Osaka without knocking. “He just stood there staring at me. I was frozen in fear. I changed hotels the next day.”
Natalia’s experience has sparked serious concerns about hotel safety, even in countries known for low crime. Her story is now a warning to travelers: always stay alert, even in places you believe are safe.
