The Mohamed bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity and its partners have started a new plan called the Beginnings Fund. This plan is made to help save the lives of mothers and newborn babies in Africa. It will work with African governments and health experts to give better care to mothers and babies. The goal is to stop more than 300,000 deaths and help 34 million mothers and babies by the year 2030.

The total money for this big plan is around 600 million dollars. The Mohamed bin Zayed Foundation gave 125 million dollars, which helped bring more money from other groups like the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation, Delta Philanthropies, the ELMA Foundation, and the Gates Foundation. Some other supporters also gave money, like the Horace W. Smith Foundation and the Patchwork Collective.

In the next five years, the fund will help hospitals, health centers, and workers in ten African countries. These countries are Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Lesotho, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zimbabwe. The money will be used to train health workers, buy medical tools, and make sure mothers and babies get the help they need, especially during birth. The goal is to help in places where most deaths happen, which can often be prevented with the right care.

The launch of the Beginnings Fund took place at Kanad Hospital in Al Ain, the first modern hospital in Abu Dhabi. Many important guests attended the event, including Sheikh Theyab bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan. Ministers of Health from several African countries were also there. Sheikh Theyab said that in the early days of the UAE, many mothers and babies died because there was not enough good healthcare. But with effort and support, that changed. Now, the UAE wants to help Africa in the same way.

In Sub-Saharan Africa, a baby dies every seven seconds. Each year, 182,000 mothers, 1.2 million babies, and 950,000 stillbirths happen, even though most of these deaths can be prevented. Dr. Tedros from the World Health Organization said that the world has made progress in saving lives, but more needs to be done. He said this fund is a strong step in the right direction.

The fund will focus on simple and low-cost health tools. It will also train more nurses and doctors and help hospitals work better. The ministers from Ethiopia, Malawi, Rwanda, and Zanzibar said that this work is very important. Ethiopia’s Health Minister, Dr. Mekdes Daba, said that no mother or baby should die from a problem that can be stopped.

Other leaders also shared their thoughts. Sir Chris Hohn said that it is wrong that mothers and babies are still dying when we have the tools to save them. Tanya Masiyiwa said this is a big team effort that can bring real change. Robyn Calder said this work can help save many lives and help families. Mark Suzman from the Gates Foundation said new ways to help mothers and babies are ready, but they must reach the people who need them.

Alice Kang’ethe, the CEO of the Beginnings Fund, said African countries are doing a lot to help mothers and babies, and this fund will give them more support to keep going and do even better.
