A second U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson, is now in the Middle East, getting ready for talks between the U.S. and Iran about Iran’s growing nuclear program. The aircraft carrier is part of the U.S. Navy and is operating in the Arabian Sea, near Yemen. It is also keeping an eye on the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, who control parts of Yemen. The U.S. has been attacking these rebels to put pressure on Iran before the nuclear talks.

The place where the talks will happen is still not clear. Earlier, it was said that the talks might take place in Rome, but Iran later said that the talks should happen in Oman. The U.S. has not yet confirmed where they will be held.
The talks are very important. The U.S. and Iran have not gotten along for almost 50 years, and the nuclear talks could decide whether Iran will be allowed to continue its nuclear program. President Trump has even said he might bomb Iran’s nuclear sites if a deal is not made. Iran, on the other hand, has warned that it could try to make nuclear weapons if the talks don’t lead to a deal.
Steve Witkoff, a U.S. envoy, said that these talks might try to go back to the 2015 nuclear deal that former President Obama made with Iran. Under that deal, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program in return for some relief from sanctions. Witkoff said that the talks were “positive” and that the goal was to check if Iran is still following the rules and to make sure they are not building nuclear weapons.
Satellite photos show the USS Carl Vinson near an island off Yemen, which is close to the Gulf of Aden. It is sailing with other ships, including the USS Princeton, a missile cruiser, and two destroyers. The carrier was sent to the Middle East to help support another U.S. ship, the USS Harry S. Truman, which has been attacking the Houthi rebels for weeks.
Meanwhile, Witkoff has said that Iran should stop enriching uranium to levels higher than 3.67%, which is the amount agreed upon in the 2015 deal. Right now, Iran is enriching uranium up to 60%, which is closer to the 90% level needed for nuclear weapons. Witkoff said that Iran should only enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, not for building bombs.
When Iran signed the 2015 deal, it agreed to limit how much uranium it could enrich and to keep its uranium at a much lower level. In return, Iran got access to frozen money and the chance to trade oil freely. But after Trump pulled out of the deal in 2018, Iran began to enrich uranium more.
Iran’s Javan newspaper suggested that Iran might be open to reducing how much uranium it enriches. The paper said that Iran could reduce enrichment again without giving up its values or beliefs.
However, Trump left the deal partly because of Iran’s missile program. Witkoff has said that any new deal with Iran must also focus on its missile program. Iran uses its missiles to defend itself against other countries in the region that have advanced weapons. Getting Iran to give up its missiles would be very hard in the talks.
The talks will focus on these important issues: Iran’s uranium enrichment, its missiles, and making sure that Iran is following the rules. The outcome of these talks could affect not just the U.S. and Iran, but the entire Middle East and the world.
