UK Athletics Charged Over 2017 Death of UAE Paralympic Athlete

UK Athletics and Keith Davies, the former head of sport for the 2017 World Paralympic Athletics Championships, have been charged over the death of UAE Paralympic athlete Abdullah Hayayei in 2017.

Abdullah Hayayei, who was 36 years old, was training at the Newham Leisure Centre in London for the World Championships when a metal cage used for throwing events fell on him. He died at the scene.

Hayayei had competed in the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, where he took part in javelin and shot put. He was preparing for the 2017 World Championships when the accident happened.

UK Athletics has been charged with corporate manslaughter and a violation of health and safety rules at work. Keith Davies, who was 77 years old at the time, is charged with manslaughter due to negligence and another health and safety violation.

The charges come from the failure to ensure Hayayei’s safety during his training. Both UK Athletics and Keith Davies will appear in court on January 31 in London.
This case highlights how important it is to keep athletes safe during training and events. The charges show that sports organizations and leaders must be responsible for protecting the well-being of athletes.
