The UK’s Chief of Defence Staff, Tony Radakin, revealed that Russian troops experienced their heaviest casualties in October since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. According to Radakin, an average of 1,500 Russian soldiers were either killed or injured every day throughout the month. This toll marks the highest number of casualties for Russia since the full-scale invasion, which has now entered its third year.
Although Russia does not officially release casualty figures, Radakin described the October toll as the most significant since the war began. He noted that the ongoing conflict has caused immense suffering, estimating that the Russian death toll and injuries could soon reach 700,000. This staggering number reflects the devastating impact of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military ambitions on the Russian population.
Despite these heavy losses, Radakin acknowledged that Russia had made some territorial advances, though he emphasized that the gains were often minimal, achieving only “tiny increments of land.” He also pointed out that Russia is dedicating over 40 percent of its public expenditure to defense and security, which is placing an enormous strain on the country's financial resources.

The UK, one of Ukraine’s staunchest allies, has provided significant support, including billions of pounds in military aid, weapons, and troop training. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed Britain’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine, calling the country’s support “ironclad.” This statement comes amid growing concerns over the potential shift in Western support for Ukraine, especially following the possibility of a Donald Trump victory in the upcoming U.S. presidential elections.
Radakin further emphasized that the UK will continue to stand by Ukraine for “as long as it takes,” delivering a clear message to both President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. His comments underline the UK's determination to back Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression, regardless of the ongoing challenges.
