UAE President Emphasizes Need to Accelerate Climate Action Efforts

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), attended the opening session of the COP29 World Leaders Climate Action Summit held in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Tuesday. During his address, Sheikh Mohamed reaffirmed the UAE's deep commitment to accelerating climate action, emphasizing the country's role in leading efforts toward building a resilient, sustainable economy.

Sheikh Mohamed highlighted the UAE’s longstanding dedication to environmental sustainability, explaining how this commitment was central to the decision to host COP28 in Dubai the previous year. He pointed out that the UAE’s vision for climate action is one of growth, not a burden, and urged countries to embrace climate change as an opportunity for economic and social advancement.

In his remarks, the UAE President stressed the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate change, underscoring that no nation can solve the crisis alone. He emphasized that the global community must come together to address the challenges of climate change, while maintaining a unified approach to sustainable development.

One of the key points in Sheikh Mohamed’s speech was his praise for the success of the UAE Consensus, which was reached at COP28. This agreement outlined a fair and balanced path to a clean energy transition, with a focus on fairness, inclusivity, and respect for each nation’s unique circumstances. The Consensus, he said, played a crucial role in restoring trust in multilateral efforts to combat climate change.

Sheikh Mohamed also called for unity among nations in the fight against climate change. He urged global leaders to put aside divisions and prioritize collective action to benefit all of humanity, stressing that cooperation is essential for achieving meaningful and lasting solutions.

Earlier in the day, the UAE President was warmly welcomed at the summit by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Following the formal opening, Sheikh Mohamed engaged in bilateral talks with several world leaders. These discussions focused on enhancing international cooperation, accelerating climate action, and addressing the urgent need to combat the climate crisis.

As part of his visit, Sheikh Mohamed continued to promote the UAE's role as a global leader in climate action, encouraging other nations to take bold and decisive steps in the fight against climate change. He reaffirmed that the UAE remains committed to fostering international partnerships and supporting efforts to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
