Three residents tragically lost their lives and four others were hospitalized following a suspected carbon monoxide poisoning incident at the Gainsborough Care Home in Swanage, southwest England. This incident, reported on Wednesday, has raised significant concern, prompting authorities to launch an investigation.

As a precautionary measure, the remaining residents of the care home were evacuated to a nearby church hall to ensure their safety while investigators worked to determine the cause of the incident. Chief Superintendent Heather Dixey from Dorset Police stated that carbon monoxide poisoning is currently the primary focus of the investigation.

Engineers from the gas network company SGN were dispatched to the scene early on Wednesday morning to assess the situation, indicating the seriousness of the potential gas leak. The Gainsborough Care Home, which accommodates 48 residents, includes individuals with dementia, emphasizing the vulnerability of those affected.

The police confirmed that the families of the deceased have been notified, and the coroner has been informed about the incident. Authorities reassured the public that, at this stage, there is no indication of any risk to the wider community.

The South Western Ambulance Service reported receiving the emergency call at 0420 GMT and responded by dispatching a hazardous area response team along with ten ambulances, each manned by two crew members, in addition to a considerable number of other resources. Two patients were subsequently transported to Poole Hospital for further treatment.

The Gainsborough Care Home is operated by Agincare, one of the largest independent care providers in the UK. According to its latest inspection by the Care Quality Commission in October 2021, the care home was rated as providing "good" overall standards of care, highlighting the severity of the current situation in contrast to its previous standing.
