New Delhi: The Supreme Court will hear a group of petitions on April 16 that challenge the newly passed Waqf Amendment Bill. This bill, which became law last week after being signed by the President, has sparked strong objections from the Opposition and many people from the Muslim community.
So far, 15 petitions have been filed against the law. These concerns were first raised during a long discussion in Parliament that lasted over 12 hours. Members from both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha shared their views during this debate held last Wednesday and Thursday.
The government, however, has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court. This means it has requested the court not to pass any order on the matter without first hearing the government’s side of the story.
One of the key reasons for the protests is a new rule that makes it compulsory to include two non-Muslim members in the Central Waqf Council and the State Waqf Boards. Many people see this as unfair, as the Waqf is related to Muslim charitable properties.

Another part of the law says that only those who have followed Islam for at least five years can donate property to the Waqf. This has also raised serious concerns among the community.
A third major change says that if any government land is marked as Waqf property, it will no longer be considered Waqf. Instead, the decision about who really owns it will be made by the local District Collector.
The government says this new law is not about religion. They claim it is only meant to improve the way Waqf properties are managed. The ruling BJP party said that the law was made after speaking with many people, including those from other minority communities who supported it.
According to the government, the law will help stop misuse of Waqf land and make sure that its benefits reach more people, especially women and children. It also blamed the previous Congress-led governments for allowing Waqf boards to take over large areas of land, calling it a result of “appeasement politics.”
As the legal battle begins, the Supreme Court will now decide the future of this controversial law.
