In a significant security operation, Sri Lankan police have arrested three individuals suspected of planning an attack against Israeli tourists in Arugam Bay, a popular surfing destination on the eastern coast. The arrests followed a tip-off from Indian intelligence, prompting immediate action from local authorities.
Public Security Minister Vijitha Herath confirmed that all three suspects are Sri Lankan nationals and are currently being interrogated to determine the specifics of their alleged plot. Minister Herath emphasized the importance of verifying information before making public announcements, stating that police acted swiftly upon receiving credible intelligence indicating a potential threat.
Earlier in the week, police had already detained two individuals based on information suggesting an attack could occur between October 19 and 23. The situation escalated when both the U.S. embassy and the British High Commission in Colombo issued warnings to their citizens, advising them to avoid Arugam Bay due to credible threats.
In response to criticism regarding the timing of the public announcement, Minister Herath explained, "We did not inform the public until the information could be verified." He noted that intelligence agencies had received alerts about possible threats, which necessitated immediate action to protect tourists.
In light of the warnings, the Sri Lankan government has ramped up security measures across coastal areas and popular tourist sites. Herath assured the public that adequate precautions have been implemented to ensure the safety of all visitors. Following communication from U.S. Ambassador Julie Chung about the travel advisory, security has been heightened in and around Arugam Bay.

The police have also extended their security presence to the southern coast and southeastern resorts, aiming to reassure tourists of their safety. Meanwhile, local Muslim minority groups have been vocal against the recent conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon, staging protests and calling for boycotts of Israeli businesses on the east coast.
To further enhance safety, authorities have set up a hotline for tourists to report any suspicious activities. The police remain committed to ensuring the protection of all foreign nationals in the country, reinforcing their dedication to maintaining a secure environment for visitors.
