Jannik Sinner, who is 23 years old, will become the world number one tennis player again. This will happen after the Rome Masters next month. His biggest rival, Alexander Zverev, lost early in the Monte Carlo tournament.

Sinner had accepted a 3-month ban in February after talks with the World Anti-Doping Agency. This happened because he failed two drug tests. Before that, a sports court had said he did nothing wrong, but the doping agency did not agree.

While Sinner was not playing, Zverev had a chance to become number one. But he could not do well in six different tournaments after the Australian Open in January. He lost in all of them before the semi-final round.

This time, Zverev lost in the second round at Monte Carlo. He was beaten by another Italian player, Matteo Berrettini. The match scores were 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.

Zverev said after the match, “I have not won many games. This is the worst time for me since I got injured. I played well in the first set, but after I lost a game in the second set, my level dropped. I stopped hitting the ball well.”

He added, “It has been the same story for months. I keep losing. I think I played badly, but that’s just my feeling.”

Carlos Alcaraz, who is world number three, also had a chance to be number one. But he could not do it before Sinner’s ban ends on May 4. He was going to play his first match in Monte Carlo against Francisco Cerundolo.
