Sikkim Sets Fixed Taxi Fare for Gangtok to Nathula Route

To address the issue of overcharging by tour operators, the Sikkim government has taken decisive action by fixing the taxi fare between Gangtok and Nathula. Following complaints of exorbitant travel permit charges levied on tourists, the Principal Secretary (Tourism and Civil Aviation Department), C S Rao, issued an order to regulate fares.

As per the directive, the fare for luxury vehicles is set at ₹7,000, while normal vehicles will charge ₹6,500 for a round trip between Nathula and the state capital, Gangtok. This fixed rate includes the permit charge and is effective immediately. To ensure transparency and accountability, the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has provided contact numbers for reporting any instances of excess fare charges.

Tourists facing such issues are encouraged to reach out to the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department at 9434182178, the Police Check Post at 7908081127, or the Transport Department at 9434126851. Strict actions will be taken against violators of the fixed fare rates in accordance with relevant provisions of the Central Motor Vehicle Act 1988, CMV Rules 1989, and Sikkim Motor Vehicles Rules 1991.

In addition to fare regulations, the Tourism and Civil Aviation Department has limited the issuance of permits for Nathula to 800 vehicles until June 30. This decision follows a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary V B Pathak, attended by officials from the DGP, Additional Chief Secretary of Home, Tourism and Civil Aviation Department, and Transport Department.

The intervention by the central government underscores the seriousness of the issue, with concerns raised about the exorbitant charges imposed on tourists. With these measures in place, the Sikkim government aims to ensure fair and transparent taxi fares, protecting the interests of visitors to the region.
