CrowdStrike Reports Progress After Major IT Outage: Significant Number of Devices Restored

CrowdStrike has announced that a "significant" number of the 8.5 million devices affected by last week’s global IT outage are now back online. The cybersecurity company, at the center of the incident, is also testing a new technique aimed at accelerating system remediation. Despite this progress, experts warn that a full recovery from Friday's IT failure may take weeks.

On Friday, a CrowdStrike software update inadvertently caused widespread issues with devices running Microsoft Windows. The outage had severe repercussions: thousands of flights were canceled, broadcasters went off the air, healthcare appointments were disrupted, and millions of PCs failed to start.

CrowdStrike has reported that its efforts to fix the issue are advancing. The company has indicated that a significant portion of the affected Windows devices are now operational. Additionally, CrowdStrike is trialing a method designed to expedite the recovery process and is working to provide access to this technique for affected companies and organizations.

Australian Home Affairs Minister confirmed that CrowdStrike, along with Microsoft, is nearing the implementation of an automatic fix. This follows initial warnings from experts that repairs might require manual intervention, potentially extending the recovery period.

In the US, the impact of the outage continued to be felt with Delta Air Lines canceling over 1,500 flights for the third consecutive day on Sunday. The airline struggled particularly with a critical crew tracking tool that failed due to the IT shutdown. Delta CEO Ed Bastian noted that the outage had significantly disrupted the processing of changes in their system.

Europe’s largest airline, Ryanair, reported the cancellation of 400 flights over the weekend, attributing the disruptions to the IT failure. In the UK, NHS England issued warnings about delays in healthcare services as they work to recover from the outage. Patients with upcoming appointments were advised to attend unless instructed otherwise. The British Medical Association acknowledged the backlog caused by the IT issues and indicated that normal GP services would resume gradually.

Pharmacy services in the UK are also expected to experience delays as pharmacies work through the backlog of prescriptions. Nick Kaye, chair of the National Pharmacy Association, urged customers to be patient while local pharmacy teams address the delays.
