Sharjah Ruler Hosts Meeting with Leaders of Arabic Language Academies

At a gathering held at the Arabic Language Academy in Sharjah’s University City, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the Arabic Language Academy, celebrated the launch of the monumental Arabic Historical Dictionary. This achievement, spanning 127 volumes, is a comprehensive resource capturing the Arabic language from pre-Islamic times to the present, marking an extraordinary scholarly milestone for the Arab world.

Welcoming the esteemed scholars, linguists, and heads of Arabic language academies from across the Arab world, His Highness began by expressing his deep gratitude for their collaborative efforts. “This dictionary,” he remarked, “is a cherished gift to the Arab nation, embodying the shared intellectual heritage and dedication of scholars from all corners of the Arab world.” His Highness also noted that the names of those who contributed would be figuratively “inscribed in gold” in recognition of their invaluable contributions.

Sheikh Sultan highlighted the seven-year journey that led to the creation of the dictionary, with oversight and support from the Union of Arab Scientific Academies in Cairo, which laid the groundwork and guidelines for this ambitious project. The dictionary’s completion, he stated, is not only a triumph for the Arabic language but also a testament to the enduring unity of the Arab intellectual community.

In an effort to make the dictionary widely accessible, His Highness announced various innovative formats through which the dictionary will be available. Recognising that a work of such magnitude could present logistical challenges for individual researchers, he introduced plans to offer digital access to the dictionary, including a dedicated mobile application for easy searching and accessibility. An upcoming “GPT Dictionary Project,” powered by artificial intelligence, will further enhance interactivity, enabling users to explore the lexicon in a dynamic and intuitive manner.

Beyond the dictionary, His Highness also shared news of another grand initiative — the development of a comprehensive Arabic encyclopaedia. This encyclopaedia will integrate fields such as science, literature, and the arts, meticulously organised to facilitate swift research, and it will be curated by the same experts who contributed to the dictionary. His Highness underscored his ambition for the encyclopaedia to serve as a definitive source of knowledge, enabling scholars and students to access the wealth of Arabic intellectual heritage.

In closing, Sheikh Sultan called upon the Arabic language academies to play an active role in promoting public understanding of these projects through seminars and lectures. Such initiatives, he noted, are aligned with Sharjah’s cultural vision and aim to elevate the status of scholars, fostering an appreciation for their essential contributions to Arabic and Islamic heritage. 

Several heads of Arabic language academies expressed their appreciation to Sheikh Sultan for his steadfast support of the Arabic language and congratulated him on this landmark accomplishment. They commended the dictionary as an invaluable tool for future generations, recognising its significance not only as a linguistic resource but also as a historical archive, preserving the evolution of Arabic across centuries.
