The Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) has awarded a substantial contract worth up to USD 490 million (AED 1.79 billion) to BGP Inc., a subsidiary of the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). This agreement aims to expand the scope of the world’s largest combined onshore and offshore 3D seismic survey, currently underway in Abu Dhabi. The seismic survey’s expansion will focus on identifying additional oil and gas resources within ADNOC’s existing onshore fields, which is a key part of ADNOC’s long-term strategy to maximize the potential of its reserves.

The seismic survey is an integral part of ADNOC’s efforts to advance the understanding of its oil and gas reserves by utilizing cutting-edge technology. To enhance the survey’s efficiency, ADNOC and BGP will incorporate advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools to accelerate the interpretation of seismic data. This approach is aimed at maximizing resource recovery and making the best use of the existing infrastructure within ADNOC’s producing fields, thereby improving operational efficiencies.

A significant aspect of the contract is its alignment with ADNOC’s In-Country Value (ICV) program, which ensures that more than 70% of the value of the award will flow back into the UAE economy. This commitment demonstrates ADNOC’s ongoing focus on contributing to local economic and industrial development, while strengthening its position as a responsible and reliable energy provider on the global stage.

Abdulmunim Saif Al Kindy, ADNOC’s Upstream Executive Director, emphasized the importance of leveraging cutting-edge technologies to drive value creation and meet the growing global energy demand. “Our investment in the world’s largest 3D Mega Seismic Survey emphasizes the role that advanced technologies play in our operations. This initiative allows us to fully explore the potential of our oil and gas resources, ensuring that the UAE remains a dependable and long-term energy provider,” said Al Kindy.

The 3D Mega Seismic Survey, which ADNOC initiated in late 2018, is considered the world’s largest continuous seismic survey project. It spans 85,000 km², covering both onshore and offshore areas in Abu Dhabi. The survey is designed to provide high-resolution, high-fold 3D seismic data, giving ADNOC a detailed understanding of the complex geological formations in the region, which is crucial for future exploration and development efforts.

The project is expected to play a key role in ADNOC’s exploration strategy and help further enhance its ability to deliver on its ambitious energy goals. By utilizing advanced technologies and optimizing its existing resources, ADNOC continues to position itself as a global leader in the energy industry while contributing to the economic growth and development of the UAE.
