Qantas App Glitch Exposed Passenger Travel Details

Photo : Reuters

Qantas issued an apology on Wednesday following a concerning "technology issue" with its mobile app that led to the exposure of users' travel details, including their names, flights, and points. Many frequent fliers took to social media platforms to express their alarm, reporting instances of viewing other passengers' personal information, flight plans, points, and boarding passes.

Despite assurances from the airline that the glitch had been rectified, some users reported that the problem persisted even after the supposed fix was implemented. Qantas acknowledged the issue and stated that investigations pointed to a technology malfunction, potentially linked to recent system updates. However, the carrier emphasized that there was no evidence suggesting a cyber security breach at this stage.

In its statement, Qantas confirmed that the breach had allowed some frequent flyers to access other users' travel information, including names, upcoming flight details, points balance, and status. Fortunately, the airline clarified that no further personal or financial data had been compromised, and affected customers would not have been able to transfer or utilize the Qantas Points of other frequent flyers. Additionally, Qantas assured that there were no instances of passengers traveling with incorrect boarding passes due to the glitch.

The incident has sparked concerns about data security, particularly in light of recent major cyber attacks that have targeted Australian organizations. In November 2022, Medibank, Australia's largest private health insurer, disclosed that hackers had infiltrated the data of 9.7 million current and former customers, including sensitive medical records.

As Qantas endeavors to address the fallout from this technology mishap, customers and industry observers alike will be closely monitoring the airline's response and any measures implemented to enhance data protection and prevent similar incidents in the future.
