Police to Track Bus Journey via CCTV in Dehradun Teen Gangrape Case

In the aftermath of the shocking gangrape of a 16-year-old girl inside a bus parked at the Dehradun ISBT, the Uttarakhand Police have launched a comprehensive investigation. On Monday, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed to probe the case, following the arrest of five individuals accused of the crime.

The incident occurred on August 12, when the girl, a resident of Moradabad, boarded a bus from Delhi’s Kashmiri Gate at 4:30 PM. The bus, operated by the Uttarakhand Transport Corporation, arrived at Dehradun around 10:30 PM. It was during this journey that the girl became the victim of a brutal assault, which took place in the ISBT parking lot after the bus reached its destination.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajai Singh revealed that the police are now meticulously tracking the bus's journey using CCTV footage. A surveillance team has been deployed to collect video evidence from various points along the route, ensuring that no detail is overlooked in the investigation.

The horrific incident came to light in the early hours of August 13, when a security guard at the Dehradun ISBT noticed the girl sitting alone at a shop, speaking with a man. Sensing something was wrong, the guard immediately contacted the 1098 Child Helpline. The girl was then taken into the custody of the State Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and placed in the Government Girls Home for her safety. During a subsequent counseling session, the girl disclosed that she had been sexually assaulted.

Acting on the information provided by the CWC, the police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against five suspects. The accused include Dharmendra Kumar, the 32-year-old driver of the bus the girl had traveled on; Devendra, the 52-year-old conductor of the same bus; Ravi Kumar, a 34-year-old driver of another government bus; Raj Pal, a 57-year-old driver of a third government bus; and Rajesh Kumar Sonker, a 38-year-old cash collector working with the state roadways.

The investigation began with the arrest of Devendra, who was identified using CCTV footage. Under interrogation, he revealed the involvement of the other four men, all of whom were subsequently arrested and have reportedly confessed to the crime.

SSP Ajai Singh noted that the accused driver of the Delhi-Dehradun bus had noticed the girl at the Kashmiri Gate bus station before she even boarded the bus. This raises further concerns about premeditation and the actions of the suspects.

The SIT, headed by Dehradun SP (City) Pramod Kumar, includes a team of experienced officers: CO (Sadar) Anil Joshi, CO (Prem Nagar) Reena Rathore, Patel Nagar Police Station in-charge Kamal Kumar, in-charge of the Special Operations Group (City) Shankar Singh Bisht, and Sub-Inspectors Jyoti Kanyal, Viniyata Chauhan, and Ashish Kumar. The team is tasked with conducting a thorough and impartial investigation to ensure that justice is served in this heinous case.

The case has sent shockwaves through the region, prompting widespread calls for justice and highlighting the need for stringent measures to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly young women, from such brutal acts of violence.
