PM Modi, Trump Discuss F-35 Jets, Javelin Missiles, Strengthen Defence

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump met on Thursday in the US to talk about making India and America’s defence partnership stronger. This was their first big meeting since Trump became the President on January 20. After their talk, both leaders spoke to the press. Trump said the US was ready to sell advanced defence equipment to India, including the powerful F-35 fighter jets.

Trump said, “From this year, we will sell more military equipment to India, worth many billions of dollars.” PM Modi also spoke about the partnership and said both countries trust each other and will work together to make and develop new defence technology. He added that modern weapons and new machines will help India’s defence forces become stronger in the coming years.

After talking for nearly four hours at the White House, both leaders agreed to sign a new 10-year defence agreement to make the partnership even better. This deal will help India and the US work together in defence and security matters for many years.

They also launched a new plan called "US-India COMPACT," which will help both countries share military technology, build defence equipment together, and support trade in defence products.

A report released after the meeting listed US military equipment that India has already received. This includes C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft, C-17 Globemaster III, P-8I Poseidon aircraft for ocean security, CH-47F Chinook helicopters, MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, M777 howitzers, and MQ-9B drones.

One important decision from the meeting was that the US will now review its rules on selling India its most advanced fifth-generation fighter jets and underwater defence systems. This shows that both countries are now trusting each other more in defence matters.

PM Modi and Trump also planned new deals to buy and make weapons together in India. India will get "Javelin" anti-tank guided missiles and "Stryker" infantry combat vehicles, which will also be produced in India. This is part of India’s goal to build more weapons inside the country while still using US technology.

Both countries also agreed to make it easier to trade and repair US-made defence equipment in India. They will change some rules, like the US International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), so that India can get spare parts, technology, and repairs for American weapons faster.

Another big step was a new defence agreement called Reciprocal Defence Procurement (RDP). This will allow both India and the US to buy and sell military equipment from each other more easily.

PM Modi and Trump also announced a new project called the Autonomous Systems Industry Alliance (ASIA). This plan will help India and the US work together in making modern defence technology, such as automated and robotic weapons.

This meeting showed that India and the US are becoming even stronger defence partners. With new agreements, plans to build weapons together, and trust growing between both nations, this partnership will only become stronger in the future.
