Paul McCartney, the famous Beatles musician, is worried that artificial intelligence (AI) could be used to take advantage of artists. He believes that AI might be used in a way that does not pay artists for their hard work. McCartney is asking the UK government to make sure that new laws will protect creative people like musicians and artists.

All over the world, the music and film industries are facing problems with AI programs that can make new music or movies by learning from existing works. These programs sometimes use popular music and films without giving credit or paying the people who originally created them.
In December, the UK government suggested that artists could allow their work to be used to teach AI, but they also said there should be an exception for AI developers to use content where the rights are not clearly given away.
McCartney said in an interview that he was worried that only big tech companies would make money from AI unless the government made sure the artists' rights were protected. He said, “AI is a great thing, but it shouldn’t take advantage of creative people. Make sure you protect the artists, or there won’t be any artists left.”
The UK government is now looking at changing the rules about how copyrights work with new technology. They know there is confusion about how the current rules apply to AI, and they want to make sure this doesn’t stop new businesses from using AI technology.
McCartney, who used AI in 2023 to bring back the voice of late Beatles member John Lennon, said that artists could lose money if these changes are not done right. He explained that new songwriters, especially young people, could have their songs taken by others if there are no strong laws to protect them.
“You get young people writing beautiful songs, and they don’t own them or make money from them. Anyone can just take them,” he said. “The money is going somewhere, and it should be going to the person who made the song, not a tech company.”
McCartney’s words show how important it is to protect artists in the digital age, especially when new technology is changing how we make and share music and other creative works.
