Partial Solar Eclipse Visible in Northern Hemisphere

Post by: Pratik Kumar

Moon will move in front of the Sun for nearly four hours, creating a partial solar eclipse. This means the Moon will cover part of the Sun, and people in some parts of the Northern Hemisphere will be able to see it if they take care of their eyes. The eclipse will be visible in eastern Canada, northern Russia, and possibly in most of Europe, some parts of North America, and northwest Africa. The Paris Observatory in France has shared this information.

The eclipse will start at 08:50 GMT and end at 12:43 GMT. The best view of the eclipse will happen at 10:47 GMT. The best places to see the most eclipse will be northeastern Canada and Greenland. A solar eclipse happens when the Sun, Moon, and Earth line up in space. When the Moon completely covers the Sun, it is called a total solar eclipse, making the sky dark like twilight. But this time, the Moon will cover only up to 90% of the Sun in some areas, which will make the Sun’s light weaker and colder, said Florent Deleflie, an astronomer from the Paris Observatory.

In France, the eclipse will not be very strong. Depending on where a person is, the Moon will cover only 10% to 30% of the Sun. Most people will not notice any change just by looking at the sky, Deleflie explained.

People who want to see the eclipse must be very careful. Looking directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse, can damage the eyes forever. Special eclipse glasses are one way to protect the eyes, but Deleflie warned that if the glasses have a small scratch or hole, they are not safe. He suggested that people go to an astronomy center to watch the eclipse safely. At an observatory, people can see the eclipse safely and also look at other things on the Sun’s surface, like dark sunspots.

If someone tries to take a photo or video with a phone, the eclipse will not be visible without a special filter. The Sun is too bright, and the darkened part will not appear on the screen, Deleflie said.

This solar eclipse comes two weeks after a total lunar eclipse, which is also called a "Blood Moon." During that event, the Moon looked deep red in the night sky. Saturday’s eclipse will be the first solar eclipse of this year and the 17th eclipse of this century. But a much bigger eclipse is coming soon.

On August 12, 2026, a total solar eclipse will be fully visible in Iceland, northern Spain, and parts of Portugal. In other places like Britain, France, and Italy, the Moon will cover more than 90% of the Sun. The last total solar eclipse happened in April 2024, when North America got a chance to see the Moon completely block the Sun. The next total solar eclipse in 2026 is expected to be just as amazing.
