On Saturday, the Canadian Parliament in Ottawa was put on lockdown after a man broke into the East Block of the Parliament building and barricaded himself inside. The police responded quickly and arrested the man on Sunday morning.
Authorities said the man gained "unauthorized access" to the building, but they are not sure if he had any weapons or if he made any threats. The police worked fast to secure the area, and they evacuated people from the East Block. Luckily, no one was hurt.
The Ottawa police posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), saying, “Officers are on the scene at Parliament Hill for a barricaded man in the East Block. There is a large police presence. The East Block has been evacuated. There are no known injuries.”

They also warned people to stay away from the area and follow the police’s instructions. Road closures were put in place on Wellington Street from Bank Street to Sussex Drive to keep people safe.
As the situation unfolded, the Parliamentary Protective Service (PPS) sent out an emergency alert at 2:45 p.m. The alert told people inside the building to “seek shelter in the nearest room, close and lock all doors, and hide.” It also advised anyone not in the area to stay away and wait for further instructions from the authorities.
Canadian Senator Patrick Brazeau shared a picture of the alert on social media, urging people to “Stay safe, Ottawa.”
Hours later, the police managed to take the man into custody. They haven’t shared more details about him yet. The police confirmed that the criminal investigation is still ongoing and promised to give an update the next day.
Special police teams, including a canine unit and two bomb disposal robots, were deployed to help secure the area.
It’s important to note that the Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, had dissolved Parliament on March 23 to prepare for a snap election, which is scheduled for April 28. This election will take place almost six months earlier than originally planned for October 27.
