The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is stepping up its inquiry into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, with a focus on potential suspects named by the victim's parents. On August 16, the CBI confirmed that the parents had provided names of several interns and physicians they suspect were involved in the crime. The investigation, prompted by an order from the Calcutta High Court, aims to uncover the full extent of the involvement of these individuals.

"The parents have alleged that multiple people from the hospital, including interns and doctors, might have been involved in their daughter's assault and murder. We are prioritizing the questioning of these suspects," a CBI officer stated. The investigation has identified at least 30 suspects so far, and questioning is underway.

The CBI has summoned a house staff member and two post-graduate trainees who were on duty the night of the crime. Additionally, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the hospital, is being questioned. Dr. Ghosh resigned two days after the body was discovered and has since sought protection from the Calcutta High Court due to fears for his safety.

In a significant development, the CBI conducted a reconstruction of the crime scene using advanced 3D technology. This step aims to clarify the circumstances surrounding the murder, which took place in a seminar room at the hospital.

Amid the ongoing investigation, political tensions have escalated. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the opposition parties, particularly CPI(M) and BJP, of staging vandalism at RG Kar Medical College to mislead the public and distort the truth. "We want the truth to come out, but false narratives and fake news are being spread to obscure the facts," Banerjee asserted during a rally.

In response, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia criticized the INDIA bloc leaders for their perceived inaction on the issue. Bhatia labeled them as "political vultures" who exploit crimes for political gain. He emphasized that law and order in West Bengal had deteriorated and vowed that the CBI would ensure that those responsible would face severe punishment.

Nationwide protests have erupted among medical students and professionals, calling for stronger legal protections for healthcare workers and safer workplace environments. These demonstrations reflect the growing demand for legislative action to address violence against medical personnel and ensure their safety in their professional settings.
