Newcastle United staged a dramatic second-half comeback to defeat Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Molineux, securing a valuable three points that lifted them to third place in the Premier League standings. Wolves, in search of their first league victory of the season, took the lead in the first half through captain Mario Lemina, but two long-range efforts from Newcastle in the space of five minutes turned the game on its head.

Wolves went ahead in the 36th minute when Jorgen Strand Larsen led a counter-attack, sending a low cross into the box. Joao Gomes cleverly dummied the ball, allowing Lemina to slot home with ease, giving the hosts a deserved lead at halftime. Newcastle had looked promising early on, with Anthony Gordon hitting the post in the 24th minute after a darting run down the left, but Wolves soon took control, dominating possession and creating chances.
The second half began with Wolves nearly doubling their advantage when Strand Larsen's shot struck the post. Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope was called into action on several occasions, making crucial saves to keep his side in the game. Wolves looked in control, but Newcastle’s persistence paid off when Fabian Schar equalized in the 75th minute. Schar’s speculative shot from outside the box took a significant deflection off Craig Dawson's head, wrong-footing Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and flying into the top corner.
Just five minutes later, Newcastle struck again, this time with a stunning goal from substitute Harvey Barnes. Picking up the ball outside the box, Barnes unleashed a powerful strike that found the back of the net, giving Newcastle the lead. Barnes' goal was a moment of pure quality, sealing the win for the visitors and completing a remarkable turnaround.
Despite dominating large parts of the game, Wolves were left to rue missed opportunities as they remain rooted in the bottom three with just one point from their opening four games of the season. Newcastle, meanwhile, moved up to 10 points, level with Arsenal on goal difference and just two points behind league leaders Manchester City.
The match also saw the return of Swiss defender Fabian Schar to Newcastle's starting lineup, following a three-match suspension after being sent off on the opening day of the season. His fortuitous goal helped swing the momentum in Newcastle’s favor, setting the stage for Barnes’ decisive winner.
Wolves’ frustration grew as they failed to capitalize on their chances, while Newcastle showed resilience and quality in front of goal, ultimately emerging victorious in a match that could have easily gone the other way.
