Nepal marked a historic milestone in tourism inclusivity with the inauguration of its inaugural Rainbow Tourism Conference, positioning itself as a welcoming and secure destination for the LGBTQ+ community in South Asia. Organized by Mayako Pahichan Nepal, a non-governmental organization dedicated to LGBTQ+ rights, the single-day international conference garnered attention for its advocacy of diversity and inclusivity within the tourism sector.

Sunil Babu Pant, the executive director of Mayako Pahichan Nepal and the first openly gay Parliament Member in Nepal, expressed enthusiasm about hosting the groundbreaking event. The conference aimed to position Nepal as an LGBTQ+-friendly tourism destination and was inaugurated by Bhagawati Chaudhary, the Minister for Women, Children, and Senior Citizens. Chaudhary emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders to promote LGBTQ+ tourism, citing the approximately 3,100 registered LGBTQ+ individuals in Nepal. She stressed Nepal's commitment to ensuring equal treatment and a violence-free environment for the LGBTQ+ community, urging effective implementation of laws safeguarding their rights.

The government reiterated its dedication to protecting LGBTQ+ rights, highlighting Nepal's status as a safe destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, including offering options for same-sex marriage and honeymoons. The conference issued a declaration reaffirming its commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity in the tourism industry, reflecting Nepal's aspiration to become a global leader in inclusive tourism.

Nepal's Supreme Court played a pivotal role in advancing LGBTQ+ rights, issuing landmark decisions recognizing the third gender and legalizing same-sex marriage. Hari Phuyal, Justice at the Supreme Court of Nepal, emphasized the court's commitment to justice and equality for all citizens, acknowledging the economic and social benefits of LGBTQ+ tourism.

The international conference drew participants from diverse backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ individuals, non-governmental organizations, activists, writers, and media representatives from Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Germany, Spain, and the United States. With its unwavering dedication to inclusivity and empowerment, Nepal aims to become a beacon of tolerance and acceptance in the global tourism landscape, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable world.
