The southern region of Brazil has been ravaged by severe flooding, resulting in a devastating toll of 107 lives lost as emergency responders scramble to rescue those trapped in inundated homes and areas. Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced on Thursday that his satellite internet company, Starlink, will provide critical support by donating 1,000 terminals to aid emergency efforts in the flood-stricken state of Rio Grande do Sul.
The flooding, considered the worst in 80 years, has been attributed to relentless torrential rainfall, leaving communities grappling with unprecedented challenges. Musk took to Twitter to express solidarity with the affected region, pledging not only the donation of terminals but also ensuring free usage until the area has sufficiently recovered.

According to Reuters, rescuers have been engaged in perilous operations, including the dramatic rescue of a horse stranded on a rooftop for two days in a severely flooded town. Despite valiant efforts, 136 individuals remain missing, while 165,000 others have been rescued from flooded residences via boats and helicopters navigating through transformed streets.
Forecasters anticipate continued rainfall in the coming days, exacerbating concerns of rising water levels in Porto Alegre, the state capital, and adjacent areas. The deluge has inflicted extensive damage to infrastructure and bridges, impeding access to essential services. Reports have emerged of nighttime looting at supermarkets in Porto Alegre amid the chaos.
Governor Eduardo Leite lamented the catastrophic impact of the floods, estimating initial damages at a staggering 19 billion reais ($3.68 billion). The federal government in Brasilia has also recognized the magnitude of the crisis, estimating a fiscal impact of 7.7 billion reais ($1.49 billion), primarily allocated to aid small businesses affected by the calamity.
President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva underscored the ongoing commitment to support Rio Grande do Sul, emphasizing that the full extent of the state's requirements would only become apparent after floodwaters recede. As communities grapple with the aftermath of this natural disaster, concerted efforts are underway to provide essential aid and ensure the region's recovery and resilience in the face of adversity.
