Mubadala Partners with Climate Governance Initiative's Chapter Zero UAE to Boost Climate Action

Mubadala Investment Company, in collaboration with the Climate Governance Initiative (CGI), has officially launched Chapter Zero UAE. This initiative is designed to empower board directors and organizational leaders to effectively navigate climate risks and leverage opportunities, furthering climate governance in alignment with the UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategic Initiative.

The unveiling of Chapter Zero UAE marks the 33rd addition to CGI’s global network and took place during an event in Abu Dhabi, attended by notable figures, including Sheikha Shamma bint Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, President and CEO of the UAE Independent Climate Change Accelerators (UICCA) and Co-Founder of Aurora50. The initiative will utilize the World Economic Forum’s Principles for Effective Climate Governance to share best practices aimed at positioning UAE companies as leaders in climate management.

Membership in Chapter Zero UAE will comprise board members, sustainability consultants, and CEOs. Members will gain access to a range of resources including tailored training programs, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, networking events, newsletters, and a certified educational curriculum. These resources are intended to help integrate climate governance into the decision-making frameworks of their respective organizations.

Sheikha Shamma emphasized the UAE's commitment to sustainability, stating, "The UAE has always been at the forefront of sustainability efforts in the region. Our leadership has placed sustainability at the heart of our development strategy. Chapter Zero UAE will ensure that our corporate leaders have the insights and tools needed to embed climate governance into their decisions, thereby accelerating our commitment to achieving net zero by 2050."

Julie Baddeley, Chair of the Governing Board of the Climate Governance Initiative, expressed her support for the new chapter, highlighting the vital role board directors play in fostering the transition to a net-zero future. "I am delighted to see the launch of Chapter Zero UAE, which is the third chapter in the Middle East and North Africa. This initiative will empower board directors in the UAE to effectively address climate considerations in their business strategies," she noted.

Ahmed Al Calily, Chief Strategy and Risk Officer at Mubadala, reiterated the company's commitment to responsible investing. He stated, “Through Chapter Zero UAE, board directors will be empowered to integrate climate action into corporate strategies, fostering resilience and long-term value for the UAE and beyond.”

Mohamed Al Marzooqi, CEO of HSBC Bank Middle East, added that HSBC is proud to be a founding donor of Chapter Zero UAE, underscoring the importance of board oversight in the carbon transition journey. He remarked, “This initiative equips board directors with essential tools to drive meaningful change within their organizations.”

The structure of Chapter Zero UAE includes an Advisory Board, Steering Committee, Subcommittees, and its members, all working together to guide and provide resources for board directors throughout the UAE. With key partnerships with organizations such as Aurora50, HSBC, UAE University, University of Dubai, and Simmons and Simmons, the initiative aims to spearhead corporate climate governance efforts across the region, paving the way for a sustainable future.
