The summit, themed “Tomorrow’s Culture: How Will the Next Generation Shape Our World?”, gathered representatives from over 36 cities worldwide, focusing on enhancing the creative economy and cultural industries. Discussions centered on fostering talent that can drive the future of creative cities.

In her address, Sheikha Latifa emphasized that the report aligns with Dubai’s vision and its leadership’s commitment to fostering knowledge-driven social progress and sustainable development. She stated, “This report marks a significant step forward, underpinning the vital role of education in advancing cultural and creative industries. It highlights the direct link between investing in education and fostering a sustainable creative economy, encouraging the creation of a dynamic ecosystem that empowers our youth, inspires them to pursue their dreams, and strengthens the global cultural and creative landscape.”

A key focus of the report is the importance of early childhood education, which is recognized for its long-term benefits in child development. Sheikha Latifa called for a holistic approach to nurturing creative education across various fields and emphasized the need for collaboration among educational institutions, cultural organizations, government bodies, and the creative industries. Additionally, she highlighted the critical role of empowering women within the creative economy to ensure a more inclusive and vibrant future.

As part of the summit, Dubai Culture organized the first in a series of discussions based on the report, titled “Future of Education in the Creative Economy.” This session featured a panel discussion led by Ebrahim Vahed, Consulting Manager at Dinar Standards, with notable participants including Her Excellency Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture; Her Excellency Aisha Miran, Director General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA); His Excellency Mohammed Abdullah, President of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI); His Excellency Dr. Faisal Alayyan, President and CEO of the Higher Colleges of Technology; Dr. Saeed Mubarak bin Kharbash, CEO of the Arts, Design, and Literature Sector at Dubai Culture; and Janet Belloto, Dean of the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University. The panel explored the intersection of education and the creative economy, examining its significance in strengthening cultural industries and advancing broader developmental objectives.

This session marks the beginning of a series of discussions organized by Dubai Culture to highlight the significance of the report, which includes studies, statistics, and strategic recommendations aimed at assisting governments, educational institutions, and industry stakeholders in enhancing the creative economy through educational investment.

The report provides an in-depth analysis of education’s pivotal role in driving the creative economy, revealing that cultural and creative industries generated $2.3 trillion in revenue in 2022, accounting for 6.1% of the global economy. These industries also represented 6.2% of global employment, particularly engaging individuals aged 15 to 29 at higher rates than other sectors. Projections indicate that by 2030, the creative industries could expand by 40%, contributing over 8 million new jobs.

Designed by Emirati creative Hessa Lootah, the report indicates that current global expenditure on education within the creative economy stands at approximately $135.2 billion, with expectations to reach $174.6 billion by 2027, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 6.6%. While emphasizing core artistic skills, the report also identifies a disconnect between academic learning and practical applications, leading many creatives to seek informal or self-directed learning opportunities. To address this issue, the report calls for streamlined regulations and strengthened intellectual property protections.

In concluding, the report offers strategic recommendations aimed at bolstering investment in education and its influence on advancing the creative industries. Key suggestions include integrating essential skills like marketing, digital literacy, and manufacturing into educational curricula, updating them to align with evolving industry demands, and rethinking traditional assessment methods. It also urges governments to develop clear policies, allocate budgets, and define roles to elevate creative education, with a focus on early childhood development, improving educational infrastructure, and facilitating access to financial resources for learners and creative enterprises. Finally, it advocates for the creation of robust, collaborative programs that support cultural and creative industries, fostering an innovative and digitally inclusive educational ecosystem.
