On March 6, 2024, India will witness a historic moment with the inauguration of Kolkata's first-ever underwater metro service. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to lead the inauguration ceremony, heralding a new era in urban transportation for the city. At the heart of this transformative project lies a remarkable 16.6 km metro tunnel beneath the Hooghly River, a testament to engineering excellence. This underwater tunnel will seamlessly connect bustling areas on either side of the river, providing residents and commuters with a faster, more efficient mode of transport. With six stations, including three underground, strategically located along the route, accessibility and convenience are prioritized for passengers.

The significance of Kolkata's underwater metro extends beyond its technical marvels. The Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section, spanning 4.8 km beneath the River Hooghly, holds the distinction of being India's deepest metro station. In April 2023, the Kolkata Metro achieved a historic milestone by successfully running a train through this tunnel, showcasing the efficacy of its innovative Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system.

With a travel time of just 45 seconds to traverse the 520 m stretch under the river, the underwater metro promises not only speed but also seamless connectivity. As part of the larger East-West Metro corridor, spanning 16.6 km with a significant portion underground, this project integrates modern transportation with Kolkata's urban landscape.

Looking ahead, the Kolkata Metro aims to commence commercial operations for the entire East-West route between Salt Lake Sector V and Howrah Maidan by June or July, marking the culmination of years of planning and execution.
