Intensified Protests in Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case Medics Demand Justice and Safety

On August 16, 2024, the CBI questioned Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College, and summoned a house staff member along with two post-graduate trainees in connection with the rape and murder of a female doctor at the college. This case has triggered widespread outrage and protests across West Bengal’s medical community.

In response to the escalating crisis, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee led a rally demanding the death penalty for the main accused. The rally, which took place on August 16, highlighted the intensity of the protests that have erupted in various medical colleges throughout the state.

The Central government has announced new measures requiring heads of health institutions to file an FIR within six hours if a healthcare worker is subjected to violence while on duty. This move aims to enhance protection for medical professionals amid rising concerns about their safety.

In solidarity with the victim and to emphasize the need for stronger protections for healthcare workers, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for a 24-hour nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency and OPD services on August 17. The IMA has also demanded the establishment of a central law to safeguard healthcare workers. Following this call, medical staff from both public and private hospitals across the country have joined the protests.

Dr. R.V. Asokan, IMA Chief, criticized the health ministry’s decision to form a panel to consider a central law as inadequate and delayed. He argued that the response to the ongoing violence against healthcare workers has been insufficient.

On August 16, the Calcutta High Court expressed concerns about the lack of preventive measures against vandalism at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, which occurred on the night of August 14. The court questioned the effectiveness of state machinery, noting that the large number of people involved in the incident should have been detected by the police.

In a significant development, the parents of the victim have informed the CBI that they suspect several interns and physicians at R.G. Kar Medical College were involved in their daughter’s brutal attack. The parents have provided the CBI with names of individuals they believe are connected to the crime. The CBI is conducting its investigation based on an order from the Calcutta High Court, which is closely monitoring the progress of the case.
