Injured Emma Raducanu Withdraws from China Open, Delays Return to Tennis

Emma Raducanu, the former US Open champion, has withdrawn from the China Open due to a foot injury, marking another setback in her ongoing battle with injuries. Raducanu, who has struggled with various physical issues since her 2021 title win, has spent much of the past season recovering from surgeries on her ankle and wrist.

The 21-year-old, currently ranked 54th in the world, sustained her latest injury during the Korea Open quarter-finals on Saturday, where she was playing Daria Kasatkina. In a statement on Monday, Raducanu explained, “I sprained some ligaments in my foot which unfortunately need more time to heal. It means I can't play in Beijing, but I hope to be back competing as soon as I can.”

Raducanu joins a growing list of high-profile players skipping the WTA 1000 event in Beijing, including former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, world number one Iga Swiatek, and three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur. The tournament runs from September 25 to October 6.

On the men's side, the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing lost a top player when world number two Alexander Zverev withdrew due to pneumonia. Zverev, who recently helped Team Europe win 13-11 over Team World in the Laver Cup, was also absent from Germany's squad for the Davis Cup Final 8 in November.

Despite these withdrawals, the China Open still boasts a strong field, with four of the top six men's players, including world number one Jannik Sinner, set to compete. The draw will take place on Tuesday, with anticipation building for the tournament.
