The Indian Navy is gearing up for critical trials in Spain to evaluate essential equipment for its Project 75 submarines, with delivery expected by the end of this month, according to Navantia, the Spanish shipyard involved. In an exclusive interaction with ANI, Navantia’s Chairman Ricardo Dominguez Garcia-Baquero highlighted Spain's strong support for the P75(I) project, emphasizing expedited export clearances and strategic agreements similar to recent defense deals.
Regarding ongoing developments, Garcia-Baquero disclosed that trials for Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) by the Indian Navy are scheduled for late June at Cartagena Shipyard. Navantia, in collaboration with L&T, is fully prepared for these trials, aiming to showcase advanced AIP technology tailored for prolonged submarine operations underwater.

India aims to procure six advanced submarines equipped with AIP systems, enhancing operational endurance compared to previous generations. Alongside Navantia and L&T, German ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Mazagaon Dockyards Limited are contenders for the Rs 60,000 crore project.
Navantia has proposed its S80 submarine design, which has already been integrated into the Spanish Navy since 2023, claiming compatibility with nearly all technical specifications of India's P75(I) requirements without additional redesigns. The S80 design features advanced technologies like Bio-ethanol stealth technology and a sophisticated sensor suite, crucial for India's strategic naval capabilities.
Additionally, Navantia and L&T have secured a partnership to supply proven Lithium-ion battery technology for the project, emphasizing adherence to Transfer of Technology and Indigenous Content stipulations outlined in the Request for Proposal. Garcia-Baquero underscored Navantia's commitment to fostering India's self-reliance goals in submarine manufacturing through extensive engagement with Indian suppliers and leveraging L&T's expertise in defense indigenization.
The strategic partnership aims not only to meet India's industrial and defense requirements but also to explore broader collaborative opportunities beyond submarine projects. Navantia remains optimistic about the industrial prospects and the long-term strategic value of its collaboration with L&T in India's defense sector.
