This is the first big update for the Navy's fighter planes in many years. The Indian government first talked about this deal in July 2023.

The deal also includes extra help. It will cover fixing the planes, giving spare parts, training Navy people, and making some parts in India.

The agreement may be signed later this month when the French Defence Minister visits India. The fighter planes will be sent to India five years after the deal is signed.

Out of the 26 jets, 22 will have one seat, and 4 will have two seats. They will be used on India's home-made ship, INS Vikrant. This will make India's Navy stronger, especially to keep an eye on China in the Indian Ocean.

Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh Tripathi said in December that India is ready to stop any problem and protect its sea area.

These new Rafale jets will also help the Air Force. They have a "buddy-buddy" system. This means one plane can give fuel to another plane in the sky. This helps them fly longer.

The Navy already has MiG-29K planes. They will keep flying from another ship, INS Vikramaditya.

India is also making its own new fighter jets. These jets are being built by DRDO and will fly from ships. They are part of a project called AMCA for the Air Force.
