Iceland Volcano Eruption Triggers Coast Guard Assessment

On Sunday, a volcano in southwest Iceland erupted, marking the fifth eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula since 2021, as reported by the country's meteorological office. In response to the eruption, the Civil Protection agency dispatched a coast guard helicopter to assess the situation and determine the precise location of the volcanic activity.

The eruption commenced to the north of the fishing town of Grindavik. However, there is still uncertainty regarding the exact emergence point of the lava and the direction in which it is flowing, as stated by the broadcaster RUV.

The preceding eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula occurred within the Svartsengi volcanic system on December 18. This event prompted the complete evacuation of Grindavik, a town with a population of 4,000, and the closure of the popular tourist spot, the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Fortunately, Grindavik was spared as the lava redirected away from the town.

Iceland, situated between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, two of the largest on Earth, is known for its seismic and volcanic activity due to the plates' opposing movements. The recent volcanic eruption adds to the dynamic geological events in the region.
