Pop star Katy Perry, along with five other women, made a short trip to space on Monday. They reached the edge of space aboard a rocket owned by Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon. The other women on the flight were Lauren Sanchez, Bezos's fiancée; Gayle King, a CBS host; Aisha Bowe, a former NASA scientist; Amanda Nguyen, a scientist; and Kerianne Flynn, a film producer. This was the first all-female spaceflight in more than 60 years.
Katy Perry and her crew went up more than 60 miles (100 kilometers) above Earth. They traveled in a spaceship called Blue Origin, which was created by Jeff Bezos's space company. The passengers went beyond the Karman line, the border that marks where space begins.

The spaceship launched from West Texas at 9:31 AM ET. The trip to space lasted only 11 minutes. During this time, the passengers experienced weightlessness, which is when you feel like you are floating. After the short time in space, the spaceship returned to Earth. This flight was shown live on TV by Blue Origin.
The spacecraft used for this trip was called New Shepard. It can carry up to six passengers at a time on a quick journey into space. Since 2021, about 58 people have traveled to space with Blue Origin.
Anyone can book a trip to space with Blue Origin, but it is very expensive. If someone wants to go, they can visit the Blue Origin website and fill out a form with basic details like their name and age. They also need to explain why they want to go to space in 500 words or less. To start the booking, a deposit of $150,000 is needed. However, the full cost of the trip is not shared by the company.
In 2021, Blue Origin sold a ticket for $28 million in an auction for their first crewed flight. Another company, Virgin Galactic, sells tickets for space trips that cost between $200,000 and $450,000.
However, not everyone has to pay so much to go to space. Some celebrities, like William Shatner from Star Trek and TV host Michael Strahan, went to space without paying. They were invited as special guests of Blue Origin. A space travel expert named Roman Chiporukha said that it's not just about money, but also about who you are and whether you connect with the company’s goals. Some people may be chosen to go for free.
Blue Origin did not say which passengers paid for their trip on the April 14 flight. But it is clear that space travel is still something only a few people can afford. However, as companies like Blue Origin continue to grow, it may one day be possible for more people to travel to space. Right now, though, space travel remains very expensive.
