Seventeen years after the well-known ‘slapgate’ incident, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has once again apologized for his actions. The incident took place during the first season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008. Harbhajan, who was then the captain of Mumbai Indians, slapped his fellow cricketer S Sreesanth, who was playing for Kings XI Punjab at the time.

On Sunday, Harbhajan took to his X account (formerly Twitter) to express his regret after a video of the incident was shared online. He admitted that his behaviour was wrong and apologized publicly.

"This wasn’t right, bhai," Harbhajan wrote in response to the video. "It was my mistake. I shouldn’t have done this."

He further added in Hindi, "Galti hui, insaan hu, bhagwaan nahi," which means, "I made a mistake, I am a human, not God." Through his message, Harbhajan asked for forgiveness and showed that he still feels guilty for his actions.

Punishment and Regret

After the incident in 2008, Harbhajan faced serious consequences. He was banned from the rest of the IPL season for his aggressive behaviour. Since then, he has apologized several times, saying he was ashamed of his actions that day.

Improved Relations with Sreesanth

Despite the ugly incident, Harbhajan and Sreesanth now seem to have a good relationship. Sreesanth has spoken positively about Harbhajan in the past. He once shared that his tears on the day of the slap were not due to physical pain but because he was hurt emotionally. He had seen Harbhajan as an elder brother and felt disappointed by the incident.

Sreesanth has also admitted that he played a part in the confrontation. He revealed that Harbhajan had asked him to control his aggression towards the Mumbai Indians team during the match. Known for his fiery and emotional attitude on the field, Sreesanth said he sometimes finds it hard to hold back his emotions. However, he has shown his softer side when speaking about his bond with Harbhajan and other teammates.

Moving On from the Past

Both players have moved on from the incident and have shown mutual respect for each other. While Harbhajan continues to express his regret, Sreesanth has also spoken about their bond in a positive light. The incident, which once made headlines for the wrong reasons, now stands as a reminder that people can make mistakes but can also learn and grow from them.
