Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea: Rescue efforts are underway in Papua New Guinea's remote highlands following a devastating landslide that struck an isolated area of Enga province. The disaster occurred around 3:00 am on Friday, catching many villagers asleep in their homes.
Community leader Mark Ipuia expressed grave concerns, stating that more than 300 villagers are feared buried under the massive landslide. Rescue teams, including medics, military personnel, and police, have mobilized to assist in the search and rescue operation.
As of Saturday morning, at least four bodies have been recovered from the debris. However, United Nations official Serhan Aktoprak reported that numerous houses remain inaccessible under the rubble, estimating that up to 3,000 people resided in the hillside settlement.

The challenging terrain and ongoing land movements pose significant risks to rescue teams, hindering their efforts to reach affected areas safely. Additionally, aid agencies have highlighted the catastrophic impact of the landslide, which has destroyed the village's livestock, food gardens, and water sources.
Images from the scene depict extensive devastation, with Mount Mungalo's densely vegetated slopes cleaved by the landslide. Workers are using makeshift tools to clear debris and search for survivors, while volunteers continue to scour the area for signs of life.
Community leader Steven Kandai described the sudden collapse of the mountain, which buried homes and caught residents unaware as they slept. The landslide sent car-sized boulders, trees, and dirt cascading down towards the valley floor, leaving homes completely buried under the debris.
The local area, prone to heavy rains, faces recurring challenges from natural disasters. In March, a nearby province experienced a deadly landslide that claimed the lives of at least 23 people, highlighting the region's vulnerability to such calamities.
Despite the difficult conditions, rescue teams and volunteers remain determined to locate survivors and provide assistance to affected communities, underscoring the resilience and solidarity of the people in the face of adversity.
