Kyren Lacy, the former LSU football player, was found dead on Saturday night in Houston. The exact cause of his death is not yet known, and an investigation is underway. LSU officials confirmed the news on Sunday, offering condolences to his family and friends, as well as his former teammates and coaches.
Lacy had been involved in a tragic incident last year. On December 17, 2023, he was accused of causing a car crash that killed a 78-year-old man. After the accident, Lacy allegedly left the scene without helping or notifying authorities. On January 12, 2024, he turned himself in to the police. He was arrested and later released on a $151,000 bail.
According to police records from Lafourche Parish, Lacy was charged with negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless driving. A grand jury was scheduled to begin hearing evidence related to the case the following Monday.

In a statement, Lacy’s lawyer, Matthew Ory, expressed his sadness over Lacy's passing and asked the public and media to respect his family’s need for privacy during this difficult time. Ory also said he was confident that, after a thorough review of the evidence, the charges against Lacy would be dropped. He also demanded a full review of how the investigation was conducted.
According to a report from Louisiana State Police, Lacy was driving a 2023 Dodge Charger on Louisiana Highway 20 when he passed several cars at high speed. Lacy crossed the centerline and entered the opposite lane, even though it was a no-passing zone. In the process, the driver of a pickup truck swerved to avoid a head-on collision. A car behind the truck, a 2017 Kia Cadenza, swerved to avoid the pickup and crashed head-on with a 2017 Kia Sorento.
Police claimed that Lacy drove away from the scene without stopping to offer help or report the crash. Herman Hall, a passenger in the Kia Sorento, later died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Lacy's agent, Rocky Arceneaux, stated that Lacy had been fully cooperating with authorities regarding the investigation.
After the crash, Lacy declared for the NFL draft on December 19, just two days after the accident. He did not play in LSU’s game against Baylor in the Texas Bowl, but he participated in LSU’s pro day in March. By then, Lacy was considered one of the top wide receiver prospects in the draft, ranked as high as No. 6 by ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. However, in the most recent rankings, Lacy was no longer in the top 10.
Lacy played three seasons for LSU after starting his college career at Louisiana. Last year, he had his best season, catching 58 passes for 866 yards and scoring nine touchdowns, leading the team in the category.
