Fils Triumphs Over Injury to Secure Victory at Japan Open Championship

Arthur Fils showcased remarkable resilience as he battled through a left ankle injury to secure victory over fellow Frenchman Ugo Humbert in the Japan Open final. The match, which unfolded on Tuesday, ended with a score of 5-7, 7-6(6), 6-3, marking Fils's third ATP title.

At just 20 years old, Fils displayed a growing confidence during the nearly three-hour contest, particularly after losing the first set. He demonstrated his tenacity by saving a match point, ultimately clinching his first win over Humbert after four previous losses, including two earlier this year.

In his post-match interview, Fils reflected on the challenge he faced, stating, "After 5-5 in the first set, I was feeling I was going to be dead on the court. He was playing unbelievable shots ... I could have lost today."

Fils initially broke Humbert's serve to take a 3-2 lead in the first set. However, he soon encountered difficulties with his serve, leading to back-to-back double faults that allowed Humbert to break back. Despite being under pressure, Fils pushed Humbert, ranked 19th in the world, to save four break points in two crucial service games. Nevertheless, Humbert capitalized on Fils’s struggles to take the first set.

In the second set, Fils sought treatment for his injury but showed grit as Humbert attempted to break for a 5-4 lead. Facing three break points, Fils rallied, landing precise shots near the lines to force a tiebreak. Humbert took a 6-5 lead in the tiebreak and served for the match, but Fils delivered a stunning backhand passing shot to save the match point. He then won the next two points to take the set.

Fils entered the third set with renewed vigor, successfully breaking Humbert's serve to take a 5-3 lead. He sealed his victory with an ace, demonstrating both his skill and determination.

In a show of sportsmanship, Humbert praised Fils, saying, "I am super happy, super proud of you." Fils's victory not only highlighted his talent but also underscored his ability to overcome adversity on the court
