London-based designer Feben made a significant impact on the final day of Milan Fashion Week with a runway show that celebrated diversity in every aspect, including size and race. Hailing from Ethiopia and raised in Sweden, Feben's runway showcased a refreshing array of models from various backgrounds and body types. She emphasized the importance of representation, especially for Black women in creative roles, highlighting the need for inclusivity in the fashion industry.
Sponsored by renowned designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana as part of their initiative to support emerging talent, Feben's latest collection sent a powerful message of visibility and acceptance. She expressed her belief that everyone deserves to feel seen, regardless of their body shape or skin color, and stressed the significance of having diverse voices and perspectives in the fashion world. Feben encouraged open dialogue about social issues, emphasizing the importance of finding solutions rather than shying away from challenging conversations.
Following Feben's lead, Swedish brand Rave Review continued the celebration of inclusivity with their runway presentation. Founded by Livia Schuck and Josephine Bergqvist in 2017, Rave Review has been committed to showcasing models of all shapes, races, and ages since its inception. Backstage, Schuck emphasized the brand's focus on highlighting real women wearing their clothes, underscoring the importance of authenticity in fashion.
Rave Review's latest collection featured fully upcycled garments, inspired by the concept of thrifting from vintage wardrobes and giving old garments new life. The collection showcased a mix of plaid fabrics, repurposed men's ties, and versatile silhouettes designed to flatter every body type. Bergqvist noted the increasing prevalence of upcycling in the fashion industry and highlighted Rave Review's transition to incorporating dead stock materials into their designs.
In a touching display of inclusion, Bergqvist brought her baby with her for the final bow, symbolizing the brand's commitment to embracing diversity in all its forms. The collection received praise for its innovative approach to sustainability and its celebration of individuality.
Elsewhere at Milan Fashion Week, designer Francesca Liberatore brought a theatrical flair to the runway with a show that seamlessly integrated fashion and music. Collaborating with the Alpen Symphony Orchestra, Liberatore presented her latest collection in three distinct parts, each accompanied by live orchestral music.
The show opened with models clad in punk-inspired attire making their way through the auditorium to the rhythmic beats of timpani drums. As the orchestra members took their places on stage, they were dressed in unique ensembles, departing from the traditional black attire typically associated with classical musicians. Violinists donned peach and blue skirts, while a cellist wore a vibrant turquoise suit adorned with Alpine flower motifs.
In a visually striking moment, a group of models entered wearing symphony-inspired garments and tall headpieces illuminated with spotlights. As each model approached an orchestra member, they activated the corresponding spotlight, symbolizing the fusion of fashion and music. The show concluded with a performance of Hayden's "Farewell" symphony, during which the musicians gradually exited the stage, symbolizing a peaceful protest.
Liberatore's show was praised for its creativity and artistic vision, demonstrating the potential for fashion to transcend traditional boundaries and evoke powerful emotions. While the designer did not cite a specific protest as the inspiration for her collection, the juxtaposition of fashion and music served as a compelling commentary on the intersection of art and activism.
Overall, Milan Fashion Week served as a platform for designers to showcase their commitment to diversity, sustainability, and social consciousness. From Feben's celebration of inclusivity to Rave Review's innovative approach to upcycling, each runway presentation reflected a broader shift towards a more inclusive and socially responsible fashion industry.
