The 14-year-old student responsible for killing four people at a school in Georgia had been questioned by police last year over online threats, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Colt Gray, who opened fire at Apalachee High School, had been under scrutiny in May 2023 after authorities suspected him of posting alarming content online that depicted guns and hinted at a possible school shooting.

The FBI revealed that its National Threat Operations Center had received tips about online threats that warned of a school shooting at an undisclosed location and time. Acting on the tips, the FBI alerted local law enforcement, which then traced the threats back to Gray.

Following this, the police interviewed both the teen and his father. Though Gray denied having sent the threatening messages, his father admitted that the family owned hunting guns but assured the police that Colt, who was 13 at the time, did not have unsupervised access to the firearms.

Despite the concerning nature of the situation, the FBI stated that there wasn’t sufficient probable cause at the time to arrest Gray or pursue further legal action. The agency explained in a statement, "At the time, there was no probable cause for an arrest or to take any additional law enforcement action on the local, state, or federal levels."

Tragically, just months later, on a Wednesday morning, Gray used an assault rifle to carry out a devastating attack at Apalachee High School, leaving two teachers and two students dead, according to investigators. In addition, eight other students and one teacher sustained injuries in the assault.

Authorities apprehended Gray at the school immediately after the shooting, and he is expected to be tried as an adult.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the school sent a message to parents, informing them of a "hard lockdown" following reports of gunfire. Panic gripped the school as students and teachers sought shelter.

Several survivors shared harrowing details of the attack. One student recalled seeing Gray leave a classroom following a math lesson, only to return moments later with a gun in his hand. As Gray approached the door, a classmate spotted the firearm and refused to open the door, even as the teen pounded on it in a desperate attempt to gain entry. When Gray couldn’t enter that room, he moved on to the next classroom and began shooting.

The tragedy has once again raised questions about gun control and the handling of threats made online. The case of Colt Gray, who was previously investigated but not detained, underscores the challenges law enforcement faces when assessing potential threats before they escalate into deadly violence.
