Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has decided to bring back Marko Elez, a former worker at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). This happened after Musk asked the public in a poll on X if Elez should return to his job. The poll showed that most people, 78%, wanted him back. Musk agreed to rehire him and said, "To err is human," meaning everyone makes mistakes.

Marko Elez had resigned after some old social media posts from him became famous for the wrong reasons. One of his posts said, "Normalise Indian hate," and another said, "You could not pay me to marry outside of my ethnicity." He also wrote in a post, "Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool." These posts caused a lot of people to get upset and led to him quitting his job.
However, some important people, like Musk, Vice President JD Vance, and even former President Donald Trump, supported Elez and said he should be brought back to his job.
In the poll Musk ran, 78% of people said Elez should return to DOGE, while only 22% disagreed. Because of the strong support, Musk decided to rehire him.
Elez had worked in a very important department where he had access to payment systems used by the U.S. government. These systems deal with a lot of money, including Social Security payments and tax returns, totaling over $5 trillion in 2024.
Before his posts became public, Elez’s social media account, @nullllptr, had made even more harmful comments. The account called for getting rid of important laws like the Civil Rights Act, and it also suggested making rules about who should be allowed to move to the country. Elez also posted hateful things about people from India in Silicon Valley and even said something bad about the Middle East.
Elez went to Rutgers University and worked at Musk’s companies like SpaceX, Starlink, and X before joining DOGE. Musk hired him because Elez was young and understood the internet well. Now, Elez is back at DOGE, which is changing how the government works in some ways since Trump became president.
