On Saturday, protests and candle marches were held nationwide as doctors went on a 24-hour strike organized by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). This action followed the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9. The strike also condemned the vandalism that occurred at the hospital on August 14.
Disruptions and Protests
The strike led to significant disruptions in medical services. Outpatient departments (OPDs) and elective surgeries were halted across both private and public hospitals, with only emergency services remaining operational. Doctors from various states, including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Assam, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, participated in the strike, highlighting their solidarity with the victim and their demand for justice.
