Dehradun Gang-Rape: 5 Arrested, Including Driver, for Assaulting Minor on Bus

New Delhi: In a disturbing case that has shocked the region, the Uttarakhand police have arrested five individuals in connection with the alleged gang rape of a teenage girl on a state government bus. The bus, which had arrived from Delhi, was the scene of the assault, officials reported.

According to Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh, the arrests include both the driver and conductor of the bus involved in the incident. Singh stated that the assault occurred on August 12 at the local bus stand and was reported to authorities on the evening of August 17.

The police responded promptly, utilizing CCTV footage to trace the bus and apprehend the suspects. The arrested individuals include Dharmendra Kumar (32) and Rajpal (57), both from Buggawala in Haridwar, Uttarakhand; Devendra (52) from Bhagwanpur, Haridwar; Rajesh Kumar Sonkar (38) from Patel Nagar, Dehradun; and Ravi Kumar (34) from Nawabganj, Farrukhabad district, Uttar Pradesh.

Of those arrested, Dharmendra Kumar is identified as the bus driver, and Devendra is the conductor. Ravi Kumar and Rajpal are also bus drivers, while Sonkar serves as a cashier for Uttarakhand Roadways stationed at the bus stand.

The bus implicated in the crime has been impounded, and forensic teams are currently collecting evidence from the vehicle.

The case came to light after the Dehradun Child Welfare Committee (CWC) was alerted to a 16-17-year-old girl sitting alone on a bench at platform 12 of the Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT) late on August 12. Concerned for her safety, the CWC arranged for the girl to be taken to Bal Niketan, a government-run girls' home.

During her stay at Bal Niketan, the girl disclosed the alleged rape during a counseling session. Consequently, CWC member Pratibha Joshi filed a police complaint on the evening of August 17.

Following the complaint, the police have registered a case under Section 70 (2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act at the Patel Nagar police station.
