Chief Nike Davies-Okundaye Empowers Women Through Nigerian Art

 Credit: Khaleej Times

In a world dominated by patriarchal norms that have often oppressed and silenced women, Chief Dr Nike Davies-Okundaye emerges as a powerful voice, bringing hope and empowerment to countless lives. At 72, with five decades of artistic prowess, she is affectionately known as Mama Nike, a maternal figure supporting female artists in Nigeria and beyond.

Mama Nike's journey from a challenging upbringing, marked by poverty and a polygamous marriage, transformed her passion for traditional Nigerian art into a purpose. Her artistry, particularly in Yoruba batik and textile designing, became a beacon of resilience in the face of adversity.

Initiated into traditional art by her great grandmother in childhood, Mama Nike's commitment to her craft deepened as she decided to break the cycle of suffering for women in similar situations. Her breakthrough in 1974, which took her to America, inspired her mission to teach women how to use traditional handwork for independence.

As the owner of the Nike Art Gallery, the largest in West Africa, Mama Nike focuses on cloth work and embroidery, employing indigenous techniques. Her impact goes beyond art, as she plays a pivotal role in empowering women economically and socially.

One significant aspect of Mama Nike's advocacy is her revival of the Indigo textile art, a craft at risk of fading away. Through her expertise, she not only creates striking tied and dyed marvels but also ensures artists receive due recognition by signing their names on their hand-painted textiles.

Mama Nike's designs draw inspiration from her life experiences, addressing societal issues, especially those affecting women. Her indigo-hued creations reflect a profound love for her art and its significance in empowering hundreds of women she continues to train.

Despite facing initial resistance and arrests for empowering women economically, Mama Nike persisted in her mission. Her triumph over challenges includes an interesting twist in her personal life, marrying a policeman, which brought an end to struggles with authorities.

Mama Nike's success story is a testament to her commitment and resilience, from escaping an arranged marriage at 15 to opening her five-storey gallery in Lagos in 2008. Beyond being an ambassador of African art, she stands tall as a beacon of liberation for women caught in patriarchal constraints.

For those eager to embrace the exclusive Yoruba blue in their wardrobe, Chief Nike's brand Africa Art is set to arrive in Dubai in 2024, promising a splash of culture and empowerment.
