Centre to Play Crucial Role in Shaping Global 6G Networks, Says Telecom Secretary

Chennai: Dr. Neeraj Mittal, Secretary (Telecom), emphasized the Centre's pivotal role in shaping global standards and infrastructure for 6G networks during the inauguration of a centre of excellence on 6G at IIT-M Research Park, Chennai. This significant initiative aligns with the 'Bharat 6G Vision' document unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March last year.

Prime Minister Modi has envisioned India as a front-runner in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030. Mr. Mittal highlighted that this new centre aims to foster a coordinated and cohesive approach to advancing 6G technology, ensuring that all projects benefit from shared expertise and resources.

The newly inaugurated centre of excellence is part of the Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCoE)-India and is set to lead the way in 6G technology development and deployment. It promises to deliver unprecedented speeds, ultra-low latency, and enhanced connectivity. This centre will serve as a hub for innovation, bringing together academic and industry experts to collaborate on cutting-edge projects, thereby fostering the development of new applications and services that leverage 6G's advanced capabilities.

Moreover, the centre will facilitate integration with the existing 5G Test Bed at IIT Madras. Developed indigenously through a collaborative effort involving eight institutes and funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), the 5G Test Bed was inaugurated by PM Modi in May 2022 and has since been extensively utilized by both industry and academia for testing new 5G products and use-cases.

The DoT has also funded two next-generation testbeds to advance 6G research. As part of the Bharat 6G Vision, the DoT is currently evaluating 470 proposals aimed at accelerating research on the 6G ecosystem.
