Sherwood scored the winning goal in overtime. The Canucks became the first NHL team ever to score three goals in the last minute of regular time. All three goals were scored while they had six players on the ice and no goalie.
“It shows how strong our team is,” Sherwood said. He got a pass from Conor Garland who was behind the Dallas Stars’ goal. Sherwood then shot the puck into the net and won the game.
The Canucks were losing 3-0 after two periods. Then they were still behind 5-2 in the last minute of the third period. But they made a strong comeback and shocked everyone by tying the game and winning in overtime.
“That was one of the best games,” said Vancouver coach Rick Tocchet. “Our players didn’t give up. They showed big heart.”
In the third period, Jake DeBrusk and Victor Mancini scored for Vancouver and made the score 3-2. But Dallas scored two more goals. Mavrik Bourque scored with 2 minutes and 45 seconds left. Then Mikael Granlund scored into an empty net 24 seconds later. Dallas was leading 5-2.
“It looked like we would lose,” said Coach Tocchet. “But then we scored, and I saw fight in our players. No one gave up.”
Then came the magic.
Aatu Raty scored the first goal with 1 minute left. Pius Suter scored again with 30 seconds left. And Suter scored once more with just 5.2 seconds left to tie the game 5-5.
In overtime, Dallas player Mikko Rantanen got a penalty for slashing after 46 seconds. Dallas stopped the Canucks from scoring during the power play, and then both teams played 4 vs 4. After that, Sherwood scored the final goal to win.
If Dallas had won, they would have taken second place in their division. Now they are four points behind Winnipeg before their next game.
“I’ve played many games,” said Dallas coach Pete DeBoer. “But I’ve never lost one like this.”
Jamie Benn, the Dallas team captain who grew up near Vancouver, said, “That was a bad loss. We should have finished that game.”
But it was the Canucks’ night. They made NHL history and kept their playoff hopes alive.
