Belgrade’s Hotel Yugoslavia, once a symbol of progress in the former socialist state, now faces an uncertain fate as it stands silent, awaiting likely demolition. This iconic hotel, a favorite gathering place for both local residents and world leaders, has fallen into disrepair since its glory days. Built in the 1960s, it was celebrated as a modernist architectural marvel, but now its future is shrouded in debates over its historical significance versus the push for advanced development in a rapidly growing city.

Once characterized by a polished white facade, the hotel now bears the scars of neglect, with crumbling concrete and graffiti marring its exterior. Inside, the remnants of luxury are evident, with debris strewn across once-opulent red carpeted floors. Faded velvet armchairs, torn mattresses, and sagging curtains reveal the decline from its former splendor. The presidential suite, where dignitaries once stayed, has become a refuge for pigeons entering through shattered windows.
As Belgrade continues to expand with new high-rises, the hotel’s impending demolition has ignited controversy. Supporters of preservation view the building as a relic of history worth saving, while others envision new possibilities rising from its ruins. After opening its doors in 1969, the hotel quickly became a five-star destination known for hosting distinguished guests, including Queen Elizabeth II, U.S. Presidents Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter, and even astronauts like Neil Armstrong.
The hotel, which boasts a stunning view of the Danube River in the New Belgrade district, was damaged during the NATO bombing in 1999, a consequence of Serbia's violent actions in Kosovo. Although some areas of the hotel were renovated, it continued to host guests until a few months ago, when new private investors announced plans for demolition and redevelopment. The proposed project includes constructing two 150-meter (500-foot) towers that will feature a luxury hotel, offices, and private apartments.
When asked why complete demolition is necessary rather than incorporating the historic building into the new project, Zivorad Vasic, a spokesperson for the investors, highlighted several factors. He noted that extensive damage occurred during the 1999 bombing and emphasized that the hospitality industry has changed dramatically since the hotel was built.
Architect and tourist guide Matija Zlatanovic, who regularly shares the hotel’s rich history with visitors, expressed concerns regarding the new plans. He described them as “controversial” and raised valid questions about the size of the proposed buildings, which contribute to the growing trend of towering structures in Belgrade. The impact of these new constructions on the surrounding neighborhood remains uncertain.
Local residents, especially those who will live in the shadows of the proposed skyscrapers, are protesting against the project. Some have taken to the streets weekly, vowing to physically obstruct the demolition if necessary. Svetlana Gojun, a protester, passionately defended the hotel’s significance, stating, “Hotel Yugoslavia represents a huge part of our history.” She emphasized its global connections, noting, “Half the world came to this hotel, from actors, musicians, politicians, writers. Everyone is tied to this hotel. The whole world knows about that hotel. And now we will allow something like that to disappear?”
As the debate continues, the fate of Hotel Yugoslavia remains a poignant reflection of Belgrade's evolving identity and the struggle between preserving the past and embracing the future.
