At least 60 dead in tragic road accident in Ethiopia

Post by: Omar Nasser

At least 60 people were killed in Ethiopia when a truck carrying many passengers plunged into a river in the Sidama region, located in the south of the country. The tragic accident occurred on Sunday in the Bona district, as confirmed by the regional communication bureau. The survivors of the crash have been taken to Bona General Hospital for treatment, although no further information on their condition has been shared by the authorities.

The truck was reportedly on its way to a wedding when the accident happened. It is not yet clear why the truck lost control and fell into the river. The crash has left the community in shock and mourning, as many of those onboard were heading to a joyful event.

Traffic accidents are unfortunately common in Ethiopia, largely due to poor road conditions and many vehicles being old and poorly maintained. The lack of proper safety standards for vehicles and roads increases the risk of accidents.

This incident is the latest in a series of deadly accidents. In 2018, a similar tragedy occurred when a bus carrying mostly students plunged into a ravine in northern Ethiopia, killing at least 38 people.

After this latest crash, local authorities and residents are calling for stronger safety measures. They are asking for better road conditions, well-maintained vehicles, and more strict enforcement of traffic rules to prevent further accidents. Many are hoping the government will focus more on road safety to reduce the number of such tragic events in the future.
