Apple has been fined 150 million euros ($162.42 million) by French officials for unfairly using its strong position in mobile app ads. The fine was given because Apple used a special privacy tool between 2021 and 2023 in a way that hurt other businesses.

The French authorities did not ask Apple to remove or change the tool but punished the company for how it worked. This is the first time Apple has been fined for this issue.

Apple’s tool, called App Tracking Transparency (ATT), lets iPhone and iPad users choose which apps can track their online activity. Many advertisers and companies that make money from online ads have complained about this tool. The case started after groups representing advertisers and publishers said Apple used its power unfairly.

French officials said ATT was not a bad idea, but Apple applied it in a way that was not fair. They explained that smaller businesses were affected the most because they rely on tracking data to make money from ads.

Apple was also ordered to post news of the fine on its website for seven days.

This fine is smaller than the 1.8 billion euro penalty Apple got from the European Union last year. That fine was given because Apple made it hard for other music streaming companies to compete.

Apple said it was unhappy with the fine but was glad it did not have to change its privacy tool. Meanwhile, officials in Germany have also accused Apple of favoring its own services over others with the ATT tool.
